This past weekend my friends and I threw a birthday party.
I love any good excuse to throw a party and celebrate, but this was particularly special because we were celebrating a Leap Day birthday. Rare right? There’s about a 1 in 1,500 chance that you’re born on leap day so naturally we had to do it up right- a girl only turns 6 once right?
To give this party a little something extra, we decided to make a bunch of 24 year olds celebrate like they were six.
There were bowls of goldfish, cookies, peanut M&Ms and salty pretzels. We made “cups of dirt” filled with creamy chocolate pudding, crumbled Oreos and tart gummy worms. We ate slow-cooked pulled pork on buttery slider buns, paired with crisp Ciders and New Belgium Beer. Ok, so the drinks weren’t in theme, but you can only push it so far- sue us!
There was a unicorn piñata filled with suckers, cookies and shooters (The shooters were a real crowd pleaser. Seriously, get a piñata and fill it with booze, young adults go crazy for it).
There were giant gold balloons draped in streamers and Avengers themed goodie bags. Our playlist consisted of The Spice Girls, Hoku, Smash Mouth and NSYNC- all of the 90s highlights.
People decked themselves in tu-tus, pigtails and sweet shark socks. Someone wore their elementary school soccer jersey and others wore their super hero themed shirts. Everyone came ready to have fun, and the night was such a delight.
I don’t know if as we got older we started to forget about finding joy in the little things, but this night and the person it celebrated were a wonderful reminder that age is just a number and your soul can be however old you want it to be. Cheers to Leap Year!
